Property in Notting Hill
“A massive slum, full of multi-occupied houses, crawling with rats and rubbish" was how Notting Hill was described in the 1950’s. In fact this described a positive utopia compared to the mid 1800’s when there were potteries (hence Pottery Lane) and piggeries in Notting Hill. The area was rife with disease and had London’s highest mortality rate. In fact it was estimated that 90% of the adult population were criminals, although a consensus of the local residents at the time felt that this underestimated the figure.
Of course much has changed since then. Notting Hill is probably London’s most cosmopolitan area. Most of the “multi-occupied houses” have been transformed into desirable flats or converted back to their former glory as houses. The bustling boutiques of Ledbury Road & Westbourne Grove are always popular as are the markets and antique stores on the Portobello Road. There is also an excellent selection of restaurants in the area.
The architecture varies considerably. The biggest houses can be found in Lansdowne Crescent, Ladbroke Gardens, Kensington Park Gardens, Ladbroke Road, Chepstow Villas, Stanley Crescent, Clarendon Road & Dawson Place to name a few of the more desirable roads.
Of course size isn’t everything and for some outside space is the priority. Notting Hill has numerous communal gardens which are only accessible to the residents on the garden squares. Pembridge Square, Norland Square & Ladbroke Square Gardens are all very desirable. The one drawback is that one has to cross the road and use a key to enter the gardens. If you want your children to have easy access to what essentially amounts to a private park you will want to buy a property in Notting Hill with direct access onto communal gardens from your own private garden. Therefore you do not have to worry about security or traffic. Roads to consider are Elgin Crescent, Blenheim Crescent, Lansdowne Road, Kensington Park Gardens & Stanley Gardens.
Unfortunately, this type of property in Notting Hill is very popular and often do not reach the open market. For more information on how to source off market properties, please visit the page Off Market Property.
